Almost a year ago now, I met Petra and together we started completely reformulating my running style in order to be able to run comfortably without injuries. Injuries were something I had been struggling with on and off for years and I was done with it. We have tackled absolutely everything in recent months to improve my running posture. Some were easier than others. If you are used to walking in a certain way, it is difficult to actually apply the translation of 'flex your foot', but I managed to do it while walking! In the meantime, I started running better and faster, without any problems — a real victory.
In addition to the running training, there was strength training. I dare say that I have been doing hip hinges, hip bridges, deadlifts and whatnot pelvic tilt exercises for hours. Besides the fact that it was good for me, despite all the explanations, I honestly had no idea what it did for my running posture. Until one Sunday, when I had to combine all facets in an interval session to have a blast.
Suddenly it clicked. And when it clicked, I took off like a rocket. It almost felt like a liberation and it went SO well. Although the fast pace was quite tough and I was nice and exhausted at the end, it was a kind of eureka moment. All the strength sessions, instability training, and running training suddenly came together and the difference felt like night and day.
It's hard to put into words but this feeling is priceless. I now just feel the power in my legs when I start a gear. I feel incredibly powerful while walking. I can't wait to keep going and “just” accelerate and see what lies ahead.
