People often approach a personal trainer with general goals in mind, such as weight loss, muscle building or feeling fitter. But often there is more to these goals than meets the eye. As a personal trainer, we also bear the responsibility of discussing your (deeper) motivation together with you as well as why you sometimes do not achieve your goals. This is often connected to your behavior.
Understanding your behavior and choices is essential. This is necessary to achieve your goals. Although conversations can help you gain this insight, exercise can be the key to understanding your behavior. During movement, your behavioral patterns become visible. The choices you make and how you respond when things get tough often reflect the decisions you make in your daily life.
A simple example is a 'wall sit'. Do you give up quickly when the effort becomes too much, or do you accept the challenge and try again? This behavior sheds light on your attitude. If you're satisfied with 'good enough', chances are this will translate to other aspects of your life. While this is acceptable if it doesn't hinder you from achieving your goals, if it does become a barrier, you need to address this behavior. This process will ultimately contribute to discovering your internal motivation and behavior to achieve your goals.
In my view, personal trainers can make a valuable contribution to this. That is why I apply this approach in my work as a personal trainer. This makes exercise not only a means to achieve your physical goals, but also an instrument to gain insight into and work on the pitfalls in your behavior, while at the same time strengthening your strengths. This results in both physical and mental growth.
