Monday Master Blog: Stress is a choice

Experiencing (daily) stress is a choice. We do make a distinction: Soldiers who have been in the mud for weeks experience a different kind of stress, which we are not talking about today.

Stress arises when you feel you have no control over a situation. But do you actually have no control? Or is it a choice.

Take the consequences of the virus that we are now dealing with: don't get me wrong, some steps are currently impossible and irresponsible to take. But it is incredibly easy to fall into the role of victim and simply allow yourself to live through circumstances.

Why does one gym have heavy losses, while another has its best months ever? Is this due to the measures imposed on you, or are your choices not innovative enough?

Why does one catering business close its doors completely and another start a to-go? Is this because it is simply not possible or because you are making the comfortable choice? The question is: is this actually a comfortable choice? Or will this only cause you problems in the long run?

Experiencing stress is a choice: one entrepreneur experiences that his physical and mental health is deteriorating and makes the choice to exercise more. The other leaves it at that and keeps telling themselves that the gyms are closed and that therefore they cannot exercise.

Every moment you have the choice to determine the quality of your life and create what you want to be in your life. The moment I discovered that I had that choice, my life changed. This discovery came at a time where I had a fairly negative self-image, but the awareness I created with the help of friends and colleagues made a big impact on who I was. Not a victim of circumstances. I did it myself! Everything I didn't want to be there, I had created myself.

No matter what happens, you still decide how you respond. Do you live in reality, or in your internal world?

Daily choices that will positively influence your stress management:

1. Go for a half-hour walk every day.
2. Exercise at least 3 times a week for 60 minutes.
3. Spend half an hour every day on self-development.
4. Eat healthy food, less sugar, less alcohol, more fruit and drink more water.
5. Bring positivity and gratitude into your life; is your glass half full, or is it half empty?
6. But above all, do the things that give you energy. How do you want people to remember you?
