Monday Master Blog: Lack of exercise, how technology makes us weak

Even though I'm 'only' 36 years old, I still remember our first TV. Such a large cabinet with a convex display tube.

To change channels, you got up, walked to the TV and pressed the button for the other channel.
The same happened when the volume had to be increased or decreased.

Now, 30 years later, I talk to my TV and watch programs on demand.
What progress!

It is certainly progress on a technological level.
In terms of our health it is a decline.

Our living environment has changed more in the past 10 years than in the 100 years before. More has changed in the past 100 years than in the previous thousand years.

The first humans lived as hunter-gatherers 2.4 million years ago and continued to do so until about 10,000 years ago.
As a hunter-gatherer, life was all about survival. Food was scarce. Rustling in the bushes meant danger. We needed our physical bodies to survive.

About 10,000 years ago, humans switched to agriculture and settlements were founded. This made us less dependent on the environment and social contact became more important. Barter trade arose. Then it is useful to build a good relationship with fellow villagers and it becomes more important what others think of you.

Fast forward to 2020.
Food is available everywhere, usually with a high calorie density.
We live in insulated houses where it is constantly 20 degrees warm.
We communicate through technology. We don't visit on spec.
We travel by car, public transport or (electric) bicycle.
Working from home is the norm.

For millions of years we have needed our bodies desperately to survive. Our brains still work like those of prehistoric man...

Nowadays we no longer need our bodies to survive. Movement is optional.
We do sports sporadically.

In the meantime, we survive on a mental-emotional level. We attach enormous importance to our thinking brain. We are in constant contact with each other. But there is hardly any real connection.

The body has become a means of transport for our heads.

But, what happens to an organism that is not stressed?
It's getting weaker.

We are getting older, but are more likely to become chronically ill.
The social pressure to perform is enormous, resulting in a wave of burnouts. Especially among young people.
Half of the adults in our country are overweight. With all its consequences.
All Western lifestyle diseases are linked to lack of exercise and a poor lifestyle.

Isn't it time to start appreciating our physical bodies again?
That beautiful organism that absorbs oxygen from the air and converts it into life energy.
The body that is strong and resistant to disease.
The body that not only thinks, but also feels, experiences and lives!

Your body shapes itself to the function you ask of it.
Function constitutes.

A body only becomes stronger if you stimulate it with heavy weights.
You get more energy when you eat the right fuel.
You can only power 100% if you have 100% equipped.
You can only feel if you practice it.

So stop scrolling and numbing.
Look in the mirror and admire your physical body for what it can do.
Practice getting stronger. Look for resistance.
