Who recognizes the example below?
Client: I almost always go to work by bike.
Coach: What exactly do you mean by almost always?
Client: Well, I only take the car when it's raining heavily. Oh yes, not twice last week, because my wife had to work from home and I did the shopping right after work.
Coach: And can you remember that week before that?
Client: Yes, unfortunately only 1 out of 4 days, but I couldn't do anything about that because my bike was broken.
In our heads (thoughts) we almost always go by bike, but when we actually look at it in practice, this is often disappointing. In the example above, the client still achieves
not half of what he thinks he does. We often subconsciously pretend to be better than we actually are.
Our thoughts therefore largely determine who we are and how we act on the playing field.
Good news, because we can reformulate and reprogram thoughts, which means we can actually change our behavior.
The first question I often ask with a similar example above is:
'is this actually the case?' or 'can you tell me more about what you mean by almost always?'
More about follow-up questions and reformulating our thoughts in a next blog.
