Monday Master Blog: Create perspective and work with short-term goals

You're in the car and you have to drive from Eindhoven to Assen, quite a distance. New scenario. You are going on holiday to Barcelona by car and your departure point is Eindhoven. You've just crossed the border into Spain and now it feels like you're almost there! Strange... Because the distance from the Spanish border to Barcelona is the same as the drive from Eindhoven to Assen.

This is a trap that we as humans are all too happy to fall into. We have a goal, but we cannot put it into perspective. When we set a goal, we think, yes, we are going to do it. But we soon notice that this is a long road (the road to Assen can feel as long as the road to Barcelona). Because the road is long and there are so many different routes you can take, it sometimes happens that you go in the wrong direction.

Fortunately, with the car we have a tom-tom and traffic signs, but as humans we only have ourselves (and our coach). It is of course very good to have an end goal in mind, but this end goal is one endgoal. This is the place where you got everything and you don't just come here. It is therefore important to work with short-term goals. These ensure that you don't get lost and stay on the right path.

The short-term goals are of course on the road to your final goal. Not only is it nice if you achieve these goals, but these short-term goals also make it easier for you to stay disciplined and motivated! Furthermore, it is much less confrontational to give up something that should only happen in 1 year, because this is so far away. But if you have a goal every 2 months that brings you closer to that end goal, then you see the goal, after all, it is only 2 months further. Those 2 months are perfect for giving yourself maximum effort and too confrontational to stop.

Create perspective for yourself and work with short-term goals. If you have difficulty completing these forms, discuss the route you want to take with your coach and he/she will ask you the right questions so that you can set the right short-term goals for yourself!
