Monday Master Blog: Why pain is a good teacher

You know the saying: “Pain is nice.” The reality is that many people experience pain on a daily basis, whether it be physical or mental. As an athlete you will undoubtedly have to deal with pain, think of the most obvious pain, namely muscle pain. Many athletes associate muscle pain as a nice side effect after intensive training. Muscle pain itself is a stimulus in response to a small inflammation in the affected area. This will often subside over time after 24 to 48 hours, shorter for some and longer for others.

But the other type of pain that athletes can experience is pain from an irritated body part. Consider overloading a certain type of tissue, such as tendon or muscle tissue. This pain does not just happen; your body always has your best interests at heart. If you want to lift a weight that is too heavy (for your body), there is a chance that your body will come to a halt. This can manifest itself in the form of a kind of 'shooting' or a pain sensation in the trained area or joint. This often doesn't mean anything serious; the human body can take a beating. The signal your body then gives is often that the area in question is not ready for that load at that moment and could possibly cause 'damage' to your body.

When your body gives you a pain signal, it is good to ask yourself why your body is sending this signal. Do you overestimate how much weight you can lift, have you slept poorly or have you been feeling a certain pain for a while but haven't paid attention to it? If your body sends this signal, it is wise to talk to your trainer and/or physiotherapist to draw up an action plan.

It is always good to ask yourself why your body sends this signal and what 'this teacher' wants to make clear to you. Are you interested in pain and would you like to learn more about it? Retrainpain.nl is a good starting point for every athlete or trainer.

I wish you a good week!
