I had gone through a tough period, which meant I no longer took good care of myself and didn't feel comfortable in my own skin. Several attempts to take up exercise and my diet had failed and that is why I decided to inquire about personal training.
When I saw that Mitchell, who I already knew superficially from the past, was giving personal training at a gym near my new home. So I decided to send him a message. He wanted to speak to me quickly at the club and so he did. We discussed what my goals were and he asked me a few critical questions. I hesitated to start because it is quite an investment, but I am very happy that I took the step.
During the first training sessions we took a good look at what my body could handle as I had been suffering from a back injury for some time. I felt pretty hopeless as I wasn't really doing well with a hip rest with only a bar. So we built this up slowly and added different exercises based on what worked and what didn't. Mitchell also referred me to an osteopath where I am currently being treated. I notice that I am still making progress and that I am getting stronger.
What I found difficult in this process was sometimes the planning of training and nutrition, because I am a working and single mother who has an 'all or nothing' attitude. Sometimes not wanting to be so 'perfect' with my diet was a real challenge. That remains a point of development for me. I think having balance in nutrition and training is something that many people struggle with...
My ultimate (first) goal was a (fitness) photo shoot (with a light six-pack), which for me symbolized a kind of ending to a less pleasant period in which I look strong both inside and out. I wanted (and still want) to be stronger and fitter and hopefully experience less and less back pain.
It's been a few weeks since the photo shoot and I'm proud of what I've achieved. The last weeks leading up to the shoot were quite tough. You then have to deal with strict nutrition schedules (counting calories) and a lot of cardio (boring!). Yet it gives you a kind of victory feeling when you have worked hard for your goal and achieved it.
The hardest part is yet to come: persevering and not falling back into my old pattern. This is still a challenge, but I am confident that this will work out well with the personal training that I continue to follow monthly with Mitchell.
I would like to compliment everyone at Enforce Rotterdam for their efforts, flexibility (also during this Corona period) and conviviality.
And for those who also have cool (fitness) goals, I would say:
“The only thing standing between you and your goal is everything you tell yourself you can't do.”
So go for it!
