Monday Master Blog: Exercise… just for that toned or muscular body?

When I ask you, 'Why do people exercise?', what do you think of? Take some time for this. Finished? Research now shows that the terms such as lose weight, build fitness and increase muscle mass are often given as an answer to this question. All kinds of goals that focus on our physical appearance. Was that also the case with you? Then that's not surprising at all. But isn't exercise much more than that?

Let's start with the question why all those goals are often formulated in relation to our appearance. For starters, our physical appearance has become increasingly important in recent years. Internet, TV and all social media channels have certainly contributed (not always best) to this. The models, the filters and the 'oh I have a great life and such a beautiful body' photos - reinforce our urge to be slim too. We compare ourselves with all those other profiles. No matter how confident you may be, everyone compares themselves to others. That's just in our nature. The people who shout the loudest that they do not compare themselves to others will have to admit in all honesty that they do this too. So, we can be honest about comparing our physical appearance to others. But, is that fair to ourselves? Are we comparing ourselves in the right area?

How nice would it be if you compared yourself less to others and focused more on yourself? There is a much bigger and more important benefit of sport, namely the mental impact that sport can have on your life! A number of advantages at a glance:

• reduction of stress, depression and psychological complaints;
• an increase in self-confidence, self-esteem, concentration and energy;
• and the social aspect: meeting people, making new contacts and expanding your network.

Whether you already exercise four times a week or currently have no form of exercise or exercise in your week, everyone knows the feeling after a nice walk, bike ride or training. You feel proud, you notice what your body can do and you physically challenge yourself to want and be able to do more next time. Perhaps you also know the feeling of fatigue or uncertainty, because your body is less capable than you would like. The first walk or training was actually very disappointing and very difficult, which makes you really look forward to the next time.

The first step for a new challenge can evoke fear. However, if something does not cause fear, is it really that important to you or is it a real challenge? Fear is seen as a bad counselor. What if you see that fear as an obstacle that you can overcome and become master of? Being able to overcome that fear, what would that feel like for you? What kind of burden would be lifted from your shoulders and what would change in your own mindset?

Think back to big choices or decisions you have made in your life. A new job, choices in your relationship, choice of study, a new home or the choice to choose yourself and not your partner, children, family or friends. Decisions that have the greatest impact on your life always involve some form of fear. This is because it is important to you, because you want something to succeed and because you do not yet know what the consequences will be.

And what if you choose yourself more often from today? For your own physical, but especially your mental health. A choice that increases your self-confidence and self-esteem, gives you more energy, reduces your stress and allows you to choose what you find important. Would you dare to take that step? Go take that walk! Ask your boyfriend or girlfriend to exercise together or take the bike to work. In case you're thinking: I can't do this or I don't know where to start. Feel free to send me a message and we will see together how I can help you with this.

Because choosing yourself is choosing growth!
