Monday Master Blog: Blue

Blue Monday, according to British psychologist Cliff Arnall, the most depressing day of the year.

Using a calculation with a mathematical formula devised by Arnall;

([W + (D – d)] x T^Q) : M x Na.

(W represents the weather, D for debts you have, d for your salary, T for how long ago it was Christmas, Q for how your good intentions are going, M for your motivation level and After for the feeling of taking action)

According to Arnall, the Monday of the last full week of January is the most depressing day of the year. A well-thought-out and first-class marketing stunt packaged as a formula backed by an academic. Given the worldwide fame of Blue Monday, it can be called brilliant!

Blue Monday was developed in 2005 on behalf of Sky Travel by PR/Advertising agency Porter Novelli with the help of Cliff Arnall, in order to sell more sun trips in the winter. Sky Travel's marketing staff thought the annual post-holiday dip in January was a great time to bring out all kinds of holiday offers, giving people something to look forward to. And the trick works. Many holiday providers and other companies promote great offers on Blue Monday, while at the same time they do their best to convince you that today is a drizzler day.

What's so depressing about Blue Monday?

You have run out of money due to the expensive month of December, you have already received the first bills, your good intentions for the new year have not been achieved (again), and to top it all off, it is also Monday and you have to start working again. work.

It is up to you whether you believe that Blue Monday, or any other (lunar) day, will be a depressing day or a great day. And what you choose is exactly what your day will look like. If you believe you have a flop day ahead of you, you automatically focus on everything that's going wrong that day. But if you decide that it will be a great day, you unconsciously focus on all the bright spots that day.

Blue Monday is of course in your head and is just a voice in your head. Today is not a bad day at all, at most it is a little cold. In any case, get moving today, exercise, run, go to the gym, cycle, swim. Enjoy alone or with friends or colleagues. Just like daylight, exercise affects your hormones and gives you a boost. Moreover, your brain gets a break when you get moving, which recharges you with inspiration and creativity.

Is your day today not going exactly as you would like? Just remember that tomorrow is Tuesday again. And then Wednesday. And it's almost the weekend already!
