Monday Master Blog: Sports on holiday

How do you stay active during your holiday?

How do you stay fit on holiday? It is a question that is fairly easy to answer, but more difficult to actually implement. So maybe better to ask the question, how do you motivate yourself to stay fit during your holiday? Heat, good food and drinks, fun with your fellow holidaymakers and a full day's schedule quickly ensure that you don't think about sports.

Why exercise during your holiday?

We all know that exercise is good for you. Besides the fact that exercise is good for your physical condition, it is also good for your mental health. You simply feel better about yourself. During your working life, exercising helps prevent or combat stress, something that will probably bother you a lot less during your holiday. But if you start the day with a workout, you will benefit from it for the rest of the day in the form of a good dose of (positive) energy.

Motivation for exercising on holiday?

There are countless forms of travel workouts, but it all starts with motivation. For some this may not be a problem at all, but for many this is really difficult during the holidays. The points mentioned earlier are all reasons to skip exercising that day. And as soon as you say no to exercise, the end is quickly lost and you throw in the towel. 'Lack of discipline' is often the excuse. Something that you justify to yourself with an 'I'm also very active when traveling, so it's okay'. That's fine, of course, but if you want to stay in shape during your holiday, then a little more is required. But how do you take that first step and how do you maintain it?

1) Routine

Agree with yourself how often you want to exercise/be active during the holidays. Just like in 'normal' life, routine is important and if you miss one time, you often lose track. This also includes, for example, a brisk mountain walk or a surfing lesson. Provided you can stick to a routine, it is also easier to maintain motivation.

2) Do your workout at the beginning of the day

Not only is it least warm early in the morning, it is also easiest to start your day with a workout. This sometimes means getting up a little earlier, but once you've done it, it feels good. During a day away, anything can come your way. And especially if you want to drink a cocktail or beer in the afternoon, you really don't feel like exercising anymore. So do this at the start of your day! What happens the rest of the day doesn't matter, because you've already had your workout. Don't think about it too much. Wake up, put on your workout clothes and start. The longer you put it off, the harder it becomes. Do you actually want to eat something before you start your workout? Then make sure you have some muesli bars or something with you, so that you don't have to have an extensive breakfast first.

3) Choose activities that suit the holiday destination

It is difficult for many people to motivate themselves to do a workout and not everyone has enough inspiration to come up with suitable fitness exercises. But of course that is not the only thing you can do during your holiday. How about learning to surf, taking salsa lessons, going on long hikes, mountain biking or kayaking? There are countless sports where you are not only physically active, but also see something of the surroundings. Or sports that let you enjoy what your travel destination has to offer. This way, sports simply become part of your holiday and it's also great fun. Do you like running? That is also a perfect way to explore the area. Beach, mountains and stairs can also give running an extra challenge while traveling.

Ultimately it comes down to 'just doing it'. So you don't want to come back with extra holiday pounds, or you don't want to lose the progress you've made, or simply stay fit? Just do it and after a few times it will become routine.
